What you eat may affect your cognitive health
A new study revealed that eating ultra-processed foods for more than 20% of your daily calorie intake every day could set you on the road to cognitive decline.
Eating ultraprocessed foods make our lives easier. There is nothing more convenient than them after having a busy day at work and coming home hangry! and also the pleasure they provide.
What are ultra-processed foods?
Ultraprocessed foods are defined as "industrial formulations of food substances (oils, fats, sugars, starch, and protein isolates) that contain little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers, and other cosmetic additives," according to the study.
Prepackaged soups, sauces, frozen pizza and ready-to-eat meals, hot dogs, sausages, burgers, french fries, sodas, cookies, cakes, candies, doughnuts and ice cream, to name just a few- are not good for our health.
In some countries they make 20-30% of daily caloric intake, with more than 50% of the calories consumed by USA and British citizens.
Effects on health
Studies have found they can raise our risk of obesity, heart and circulation problems, diabetes and cancer. They may even shorten our lives.
According to scientists at the Francis Crick Institute in London, diets high in processed food could be causing an increase in the number of people developing over 100 types of autoimmune diseases around the world. The DNA research conducted points that due to such foods, our immune systems can no longer tell the difference between healthy cells and an attacking virus or bacterium.
