Core Concepts in Ayurveda

Key principles that shape how we assess symptoms like fatigue, gut issues, endometriosis, hormones or pain

Those who built cities and structures lasting for thousands of years,
sure knew about life, human body and its health.

As now recognized by Quantum Physics, Ayurveda views the individual not as a solid, material structure, but an ever-changing, dynamic collection of energy and intelligence in the larger Universal Energy and Intelligence field.

Through observation, introspection, analysis and intuition, the authors of Ayurveda discovered that all the matter that makes our body and the world around us is made up of 5 elements.

5 elements and their relation with our body

  • Ether

    Space- Container of everything

    Bodily cavities, intercellular space

  • Air

    Atmosphere, many gases, wind

Air we breathe, feel and expel

  • Fire

    All forms of light, heat

    Digestive power, warmth

  • Water

All liquid forms, rain, rivers, lakes

    Water-life sustainer, bodily fluids

  • Earth

All solid forms, rocks, trees, soil

    Bones, muscles, tissues, organs

Modern Physics proved E=mc2, meaning

All matter- 5 elements, made up of atoms- is Energy.

Energy is in constant state of flux- always changing.

Whatever is happening in and out of us can be summed up in 3 actions: Movement, Cohesion (Formation) and Transformation, governed by 3 Doshas.

3 Doshas: Bodily Energies or Intelligences

  • Vata

Vata is formed out of combination of Ether and Air and represents movement, momentum. It is responsible for all the bodily activities-internal and external- and sensations.

It controls blood circulation, breathing, the delivery of nutrients to the cells and the removal & excretion of waste products. In mind, Vata governs creativity, thinking.

Vata aggravation results in poor circulation that results in dry skin, wrinkles, tendency towards cracking. More aggravation leads to conditions of bones, joints, nerves and anxiety, restlessness.

    Vata needs nourishment to balance.

Seats – Colon, bladder, thighs, hips, legs & kidneys.

Qualities – Rough, dry, cold, mobile, light, quick, astringent and expansive.

  • Pitta

Fire and Water elements form Pitta, which represents metabolism. Don’t these two elements have ability to transform anything that comes in contact with them?

Pitta governs digestion and metabolism of food by converting nutrients into biologically usable forms. It imparts intelligence and an enthusiasm for life.

Pitta aggravation causes sensitive skin conditions like acne, pigmentation, digestive problems and other inflammatory conditions. and, anger, hatred, jealousy.

    Pitta needs cooling for re-balance.

Seats - Small intestine, liver, gallbladder lower part of the stomach, spleen and pancreas.

Qualities - Hot, Sharp, Penetrating, Light, Liquid, Sour, Oily and Fleshy.

  • Kapha

Water and Earth combine to form Kapha- energy of cohesion, substance and support.

It gives both physical and psychological strength and stability. It promotes the healing process and aids immunity.

When in balance, it promotes love, calmness, forgiveness, good health overall. When aggravated, it produces attachment, greed, congested and saggy or loose skin, odema, fibroids and cysts.

Kapha needs activity, stimulation to rebalance.

Seats - Lungs, upper part of the stomach, heart, tongue and oesophagus.

Qualities - Cold, Damp, Dense, Heavy, Oily, Slow, Sweet, Stable and Moist.

3 doshas form unique individual constitutions i.e. bodily make-up: Prakriti
