  • There are various school of thoughts re when to have first massage after giving birth.

After natural birth, it takes about 4 weeks for the uterus to get back into its pre-pregnancy position in pelvic area. Therefore, massage therapies are recommended after 4 weeks of natural birth. After 6 weeks is most preferred as you can comfortably lie face-down and make the most of the massage. Full pressure, remedial strokes are incorporated with Abhyanga massage only after 6 weeks of natural birth.

If you wish to have massage between 2 to 4 weeks of natural birth, we can provide gentle whole body massage, while maintaining the essential relaxing and nourishing effects of the massage. For massage prior to 4 weeks, we exclude the abdomen area and provide massage with prior confirmation from you that the delivery was natural, without any complications and you were not advised as having DVT /blood-clotting risk by your GP or Obstetrician. You should be able to lie on stomach comfortably for about 30-40 minutes as well.

Massage is not suitable for 8 weeks if you have had C-section, post-delivery complications, have been identified for DVT risk during pregnancy, have history of blood clotting/taking blood thinner medications or still bleeding heavily. In such case, please check with your Obstetrician/GP before having massage.

We do not provide postpartum massage within 2 weeks of delivery.

Some massage therapies may require lying on stomach for 30-45 minutes. So please make your own assessment.

  • The number of postnatal massage sessions that a mother needs will vary depending on her situation and health condition.

Generally, it is recommended that a mother receives at least 3-5 postnatal massage sessions between 4 to 8 weeks after giving birth to aid better recovery, assist with sleep quality and reduce fatigue.

  • In addition to normal after-care after massage e.g. keeping yourself well hydrated, taking it easy and protecting from cold weather, Postpartum massage needs some extra care as below.

We use lots of nourishing medicated oil in our massages to help tissue recovery. Even after you have a shower, some oil may flow from shoulders or hair and may still remain on the body. This oil film can possibly give undesired taste for breast-feeding baby and is also not recommended for baby’s intake. To avoid this, we recommend expressing and storing breast milk prior to massage and taking extra care in cleaning the breast area during shower.

  • Herbal remedies recommended are specific to each patient’s needs. Generally, they include herbs of tissue healing, rejuvenation, better lactation and hormonal balance.

  • Specific to individual needs, we recommend different practices. Generally they aim to aid faster & better recovery of reproductive system, provide more energy and heal the body.
