Downward dog rising down under

Data from the Australian Sports Commission confirms rising of lifestyle activities over competitive sports, with 1.17 million Australians 15 and older practising Yoga – with soccer (1.13 million), golf (1.04 million) and tennis (1 million) trending behind.

Pilates (652,019) are now more popular among women than netball (532,525) and tennis (429,661) in 2021-22.

Yoga helps people with their balance and hip flexibility and many appreciate the non-competitive and peaceful environment where they can forget about work and family stresses and focus on themselves.

The data paints to also a grim health picture: only 35 per cent of adults are doing enough physical activity, while more than half of Australians are overweight or obese.
