Physical effects of negative emotions

Negative emotions arise due to various reasons we all know.

Sure they don’t make us feel good at the outset. Sometimes they pass as they come, sometimes they linger longer- few hours, days or even years.

Such harboring of negative emotions have damaging effects not only on mental health but bodily health too.

A 2021 global INTERSTROKE study published in the European Heart Journal linked anger and other upsetting emotions—like sadness, depression, or anxiety—to an approximately 30 percent increased risk of suffering a stroke one hour later.

2004 statement from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) describes a survey of 200 people who were hospitalized with an ischemic stroke or a mini stroke; approximately 30 percent of them reported anger, fear, irritability, nervousness, or a shock that caused them to suddenly change their body position in the two hours before their stroke.

Another 2021 study published in Scientific African suggests a link between emotions like anger and fear and increased stroke risk factors like diabetes and hypertension.

How to avoid such negative effects on body?

Key is not harboring such emotions by either controlling them or processing them to let go, pass through.

Ayurveda prescribes many techniques to control or process emotions so that they don’t affect us, or do not take seat inside our mind.

Treatments like Shirodhara aid in this process. Marma therapy is another therapy which can help release such emotions.
