Chakras? Are they for real?

Keep reading if wish to know authentic , scientific information about Chakras.
For now, we recommend to put aside all you have read about Chakras, as a lot of misinformation is out there.
At Ayusha, we only rely on what is said in ancient Yoga texts and sharing it succinctly below.

Demystifying Chakras

Energetic Anatomy

Developing from one single cell- Zygote- into the most complex electro-chemical factory, our body is certainly much more than mere biology and chemistry.

Spine is the first organ to form in the body and carries major nerves from brain to different organs all over.

Yoga science believes that inside the central hollow column in spine, flow 3 nadis- subtle Energy currents- from the brain to the body- Ida controlling left side of body and Pingala right side. The central, axial nadi- Sushumna is carrier of Prana- the Life force.

Prana is Life Force i.e. vital essence of our existence, and influences our thoughts, actions, behaviors and determines our health, mindset, career opportunities, relationships, and Life in general.

Ida and Pingala intertwine with the Sushumna at each Chakra.

This subtle Chakra system is housed in innermost Energetic kosha i.e. layer (out of 5 koshas described in Yoga) and our choices and actions can help keep it in balance*.

This subtle Energy body depicts how our inner reality creates our outer reality.

Chakras are

Pranic- i.e. subtle energy centers, like a spinning dynamo, in the human framework. They are located in Sushumna nadi in spinal column. Even though their physical focal points or functional locations can perhaps be assigned to definite location within body’s framework, Chakras’ influence and implications extend much deeper than physical realms.

Chakras store the energy of thoughts, feelings, memories, experiences, and actions. Therefore, they influence and direct our present and future mindset and, actions. The Chakra system is like a highway that connects anatomy, physiology, emotions, and energy.

Starting from bottom, Chakras represent 5 elements- Earth at Root Chakra where Kundalini is stored, followed by Water, Fire, Air and Ether at Throat Chakra.

The upper Chakras are associated with Energetic existence. The middle Heart Chakra is emotional bridge between matter and Spirit.

The Chakras are represented by lotus symbols, with varying number of petals, and colours as per rainbow, metaphorically demonstrating centers of awareness at confluence of Light and Water (being Essence of Life).

Coincidentally, Chakra locations correspond with important glands which regulate all bodily functions, however Yogic texts discourage this practice of identifying Chakras with physical organs.

Science and Chakras

Chakra presence is not recognized by modern medicine. But as we need microscope to see minute things, Vedic Rishis perceived their subtle presence in the Superconscious state and named them based on their location, function and impact.

Science is now agreeing with what’s said 5000 years ago in Yoga re meditation, fasting, gut-brain axis etc. So may be in few decades, we might see evidence and acceptance about Chakras.

Here is some research - a good starting point

The Muladhara Chakra has 4 petals and is associated with the pelvic organs, i.e. rectum, uterus, bladder and testis. Its location is said to be or at the base of coccyx or in mid-perineum area (which is also regarded as the location of Kundalini by some). Therefore, many Kundalini practices involve techniques to stimulate mid-perineum area, although there are many misconceptions about such practices. Such Kundalini practices on your own are not recommended without proper guidance and training.

Research and outcome

By dissecting 6 cadavers as per the guidelines given in Ayurvedic texts by Acharya Sushruta and modern anatomical knowledge, it was confirmed that the location of inferior hypogastric plexus is somewhat similar to the location of Muladhara Chakra and is also triangular in shape.

The inferior hypogastric plexus constitutes the sacral division of parasympathetic nervous system which directly controls the excretion of feces, urine, semen and fetus and, the execution of sex act and reproduction. These are the reflex functions. These functions are executed through its four subdivisions which are uterine, vaginal, rectal and vesical. These same functions are belonging to Muladhara Chakra.

The four subplexuses of inferior hypogastric plexus innervating pelvic visceras (rectal plexus; spermatic plexus/uterine plexus; Vesical plexus; Prostatic plexus/Vaginal plexus) which may be correlated to the four Dalas (petals) of Muladhara Chakra.

Now the researchers have not seen the actual Chakra but there seems to be high correlation between what is referred to as Chakra in Yoga system and what is inferred in modern anatomy-physiology.

*Chakras and Myths

As with anything ancient, there are lot of misconceptions with Chakras today. What is said below is based on authentic scriptural knowledge but may be against the contemporary viewpoint / propaganda about Chakra system.

Myth 1: Using Chakras and Kundalini to enhance sexual energy is a big scam. It’s better to stay away from such offerings.

*Myth 2: Words like open-closed, balancing, healing, awakening are used on this website in connection with Chakras, just because they are commonly used & understood vocabulary today. At Ayusha, we do not agree with use or literal meaning of these words. What they mean to us in authentic sense is described below:
a. Describing Chakras as open/closed can be misleading in absence of right explanation. If a Chakra is literally ‘closed’, logically one would not be functioning or alive. And, if it is ‘open’, one would experience supernatural realms! As long as one is living, Chakras are functioning as they should.

b. Using words like balancing, healing are also incorrect. Chakras are always in balance, being part of energetic body or sheath. They are healing in themselves and help to balance and heal the body & mind; who are we to heal them?

c. Using words like ‘awakening’ is also misleading. Only genuine Yogis, Gurus can awaken someone else’s Chakra and that too when the recipient is ready. One with any one Chakra awakened will be distinctly different from rest of the world. To give an example- in great music maestros it is said that Sacral Chakra is only partially awakened.

So what does this massage mean exactly?

At Ayusha, our view on Chakras is based on authentic Yogic description that our seemingly one body has 3 subtle bodies - physical, emotional and energetic aspects - and 5 layers amongst these called koshas. Chakras are 7 energy centers located along the energetic aspect of spine that maintain the balance of and between different physical and emotional aspects. This massage technique is used to create more awareness of the Chakras along the physical spine (which encases the subtle energetic aspect) and through that help achieve balance of our body and mind.

As an example, when a child is born, these 3 bodies are in balance in most cases, as demonstrated by the fact that children under age of 1 year do not blink their eyes- windows to the Soul- as often as adults, indicating a naturally balanced state.

As we grow older, focus more on the material world, spend our energies to combat diseases and stressors, we drift away from our Core Essence or Self and the balance gets disturbed. We become further away from the awareness of the Chakras and interconnection of 3 bodies. We lose the conscious connection with them per se, but not in literally sense.

For such ‘re-balancing’ (again that word), think of tuning the car engine. If it is not tuned after a long ride or for long time, it may go out of tune. Now one can tune engine themselves or can go to a car mechanic.

Enhancing awareness of Chakras i.e. maintaining the balance between three bodily aspects may appear difficult, but not so when you have tuned-up awareness and have regular practice to maintain balance through right choices, actions and lifestyle. The practitioner may share some tips if you are interested.

Enhancing awareness offers some tangible benefits. During massage or within few days after, many people have reported to have an aha moment about the problem they have been facing or gained more clarity. Some experienced more balance or inner harmony. Some reported a form of physical or mental health benefit like a blockage been removed or a feeling of some load being lifted, as can be seen from actual feedback received enclosed above. The effects vary with every individual .

Enhancing awareness of Chakras is like keeping spiritual hygiene, some say.

Important Disclaimer:

Of course, one must be mindful that with this massage, one will not experience subtle Chakras themselves- that’s something which requires years or incarnations of Sadhana and is only possible to highly advanced Yogis. If anyone is claiming they can do that for you, I would stay away from them. This massage is only to start the journey to increase their awareness at physical level and using this heightened awareness along with some techniques help achieve more balance in 3 bodily aspects.

More than one treatment sessions may be necessary.

For those who are interested, we can talk about Chakras till cows come home.
